In the heart of the ‘lucky country’ some Australian families and individuals are living on the fringes, facing the daily hardships of unemployment, drug addiction and illness; struggling just to get by. New three-part, fly on the wall observational documentary series Struggle Street gives a voice to those doing it tough right on the doorstep of Australia’s most affluent cities. Filmed in the public housing estates of Sydney’s western suburbs, residents invited cameras in for exclusive, uncensored access to their lives over a six month period. The result is an eye-opening glimpse at real life in under-resourced Australian communities - raw, honest and unfiltered. (Part 1 of 3) (Commissioned by SBS) (Documentary)
Theodore Dalrymple — nom de plume of the ‘sceptical doctor’ Anthony Daniels — will explore social and economic inequality in a session titled Is Society Broken? How to think about poverty, crime and inequality. A retired doctor and psychiatrist who worked in prisons in Britain’s second largest city, Birmingham, Dalrymple has famously chronicled ‘life at the bottom’, anatomising the development of a multigenerational underclass in Western democracies. His lively and provocative essays and books — including Life At The Bottom, If Symptoms Persist, Spoilt Rotten! The Toxic Cult of Sentimentality and The Wilder Shores of Marx — challenge liberal mainstream views about the causes of crime and the reality of poverty. Dalrymple is the CIS’ Max Hartwell Scholar-in-Residence for 2016. http://sydne...

However, rabies is present in Indonesia. We have large community dog populations, wild dogs and dingoes, and a border that is difficult to regulate. What would happen in our remote northern communities should rabies arrive? Professor Ward will present his recent research that involves studying the roaming behaviour of community dogs to answer that question.

The world's population will reach 9.6 billion in 2050. But do we have enough food for this bulging population? Is genetically modified food the answer to this problem because of its higher yield? Or as claimed by food policy experts that the problem of hunger is due to distribution and not due to a decrease in the yield? Is genetically modified food safe for consumption? If not, then what is the harm in conducting field trials to ascertain the safety of foodgrain? On this week's The Big Fight, we discuss the very contentious issue of GM food and the fact and fiction behind the story. Watch full show: http://www.ndtv.com/video/player/the-big-fight/the-genetically-modified-food-debate/345026

The right nutrition during this 1,000 day window can have a profound impact on a child's ability to grow, learn, and rise out of poverty. It can also shape a society's long-term health, stability and prosperity. In his TEDxUCD talk Prof. Gibney urges us to do 3 things: 1. Learn about the importance of the first 1000 days 2.
