Professor Michael Gibney is Director of the UCD Institute of Food and Health and is Chairman of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland. In this passionate and engaging TEDxUCD talk Mike talks about Hunger as a global problem and how important the "first 1000 days" of life are. The 1,000 days between the start of a woman's pregnancy and her child's 2nd birthday offer a unique window of opportunity to shape healthier and more prosperous futures. The right nutrition during this 1,000 day window can have a profound impact on a child's ability to grow, learn, and rise out of poverty. It can also shape a society's long-term health, stability and prosperity. In his TEDxUCD talk Prof. Gibney urges us to do 3 things: 1. Learn about the importance of the first 1000 days 2. Contribute financially...
We've known how to build nuclear weapons for a long time, so why can't we work out how to keep them safe? Natasha Mitchell (Chair) As an investigative journalist, Eric Schlosser continues to explore subjects ignored by the mainstream media and gives a voice to people at the margins of society. He’s followed the harvest with migrant farm workers in California, spent time with meatpacking workers in Texas and Colorado, told the stories of marijuana growers and pornographers and victims of violent crime, gone on duty with the NYPD Bomb Squad, and visited prisons throughout the US. Schlosser’s first book, Fast Food Nation (2001), helped start a revolution in how Americans think about what they eat. His second book, Reefer Madness (2003), looked at America’s thriving underground economy. Bot...

Soil & Food Heath Conference On the 28th of January 2017, Women in Agriculture from around Australia and New Zealand came together to present the Soil & Food Health Conference in Albany, Western Australia. A panel of knowledgeable and passionate experts educated and empowered both men and women on the necessity of growing more sustainable and nutritious food. These professionals included horticulturalist Sabrina Hahn and agroecologist Nicole Masters who have witnessed a dramatic decline in soil health, both at a local and international scale. Agricultural practices and retailer demand has transformed the grower industry over the last fifty years - in many cases to the detriment of our food quality. As a society, we understand this is a major issue and created a demand for vitamin & miner...

A huge 69% of audience members on the night said that political correctness had not failed itself, and that it was needed to help contribute to a fairer, safer and more accepting society. Just 18% thought that it had backfired, and just 13% were undecided. Thanks to those who came alone to help us kick off our 2017 program in style at our new venue, Sydney Town Hall. Indigenous Seminar Series 2014 lecture by Professor Michael Ward, Chair Veterinary Public Health & Food Safety, Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Sydney 22 May 2014 Australia is free of rabies, an ancient and feared disease of dogs that kills at least 55,000 people worldwide every year. However, rabies is present in Indonesia. We have large community dog populations, wild dogs and dingoes, and a border that is difficult to regulate. What would happen in our remote northern communities should rabies arrive? Professor Ward will present his recent research that involves studying the roaming behaviour of community dogs to answer that question.

Theodore Dalrymple — nom de plume of the ‘sceptical doctor’ Anthony Daniels — will explore social and economic inequality in a session titled Is Society Broken? How to think about poverty, crime and inequality. A retired doctor and psychiatrist who worked in prisons in Britain’s second largest city, Birmingham, Dalrymple has famously chronicled ‘life at the bottom’, anatomising the development of a multigenerational underclass in Western democracies. His lively and provocative essays and books — including Life At The Bottom, If Symptoms Persist, Spoilt Rotten! The Toxic Cult of Sentimentality and The Wilder Shores of Marx — challenge liberal mainstream views about the causes of crime and the reality of poverty. Dalrymple is the CIS’ Max Hartwell Scholar-in-Residence for 2016. http://sydne...
